Is this an America we can be Proud of?

    October 16, 2020 / 4 Comments

I find myself asking this question a lot. When I think about the current state of our country, I instantly hear Childish Gambino’s “This is America” in my head. The incredibly catchy, yet haunting mix of choir and trap music plays like an anthem for the current disarray in our country. If you haven’t seen the “This is America” music video, with it’s many metaphors about race and gun violence in America, I highly recommend it. Warning: there are images some may find disturbing. Although Donald Glover released the song under his musical moniker, Childish Gambino, in 2018, it’s just as timely now. Going into the the 2020 election, our…

    Spotlighting Sustainability: 337Brand

    March 2, 2020 / 1 Comment

My tagline is “Made ethically, worn practically” for a reason. I’m always on the search for new sustainable brands, but I especially like brands who create clothes that are comfortable, casual, and practical; pieces that I can wear lounging around the house or as a basic layer for work. 337Brand is just that. This sustainable leisurewear brand makes effortless-style basics with an edge. One thing I love about this brand is that they don’t include seasonal collections in their apparel line. Instead every piece is timeless and designed to be worn 24/7. 337 Brand uses the slogan “Kindness is Sexy” and the hashtag #JOINGREENMOVES to invite others to join them…

Patriotic Finds You Can Wear Past July 4th

    July 8, 2019 / 1 Comment

If I’m going to be completely honest, I had every intention of writing a post for Fourth of July, but my husband and I planned a hiking and camping trip for the long weekend and time escaped me. At the weekend’s conclusion, with the work already half done I found myself sitting in front of the computer wondering how I could salvage the blog post. I found inspiration in my husband’s over-the-top patriotic shirt- a muscle tee with an American flag covering his whole torso and an American eagle busting through the middle of the flag. The kind of shirt that certainly inspires an “America- fuck yea” or two. Admittedly…

Looks Like Fall: My First Cause Box

    November 21, 2018 / No Comments

I love fall.  I grew up in Vermont, which boasts the most beautiful display of autumn leaves.  I love watching the trees turn while wearing transitional layers and boots, and sipping pumpkin ale or spiced cider.  Not to mention that Halloween is my favorite holiday and has been since I was a kid.  My mom threw the best haunted house in town, and as an adult I have tried to follow in her footsteps.  This year I added something new to my fall traditions: the fall Cause Box. I follow a fair amount of fair trade accounts on Instagram, and was excited to stumble upon a company called Cause Box:…

Sustainable Denim Tops and Jackets for Fall

    October 6, 2018 / No Comments

For those of you who like to wear your denim on top, you’re in luck.  Canadian tuxedos are a faux-paus of the past, and now denim-on-denim has become a desired look.  Denim has been a staple in our wardrobes for decades, and is actually the most used textile in the world.  However, it comes at a huge environmental cost.  Denim is made primarily of cotton, which requires thousands of liters of water to produce.  Many companies also use pesticides and synthetic dyes to make jeans.  Luckily, many conscious minded brands have joined the Better Cotton Initiative, which uses less water and chemicals than other cotton, and has the least impact…

    FAIR Labor Day Deals

    September 2, 2018 / No Comments

Labor Day celebrates the creation of labor in our country and the economic achievements of American workers.  It’s also the second biggest shopping event of the year (second of course, to Black Friday).  This Labor Day weekend I decided to celebrate FAIR labor by only shopping locally and/or ethically, and only companies that pay their employees fair wages.  I challenge you to do the same!  I’ve compiled a short list of some of the best ethical Labor Day deals you can find this weekend.  Enjoy!   Tribe Alive- 40% off with code EXTRA40 Tribe Alive partners with artisans in Guatemala, Haiti, India, Honduras, and Fort Worth, Texas to employ marginalized…

    20 Sustainable Statement Earrings

    August 16, 2018 / No Comments

I love a good statement earring.  It’s a versatile accessory that can be worn day or night, with a cocktail dress or a simple t-shirt and messy bun.  There is no shortage in variety when it comes to statement earrings, which can be colorful, geometric, shiny, with tassels or fringe.  It seems that costume jewelry has made a serious comeback. One complaint people have about fair trade or ethically made items is that they don’t look “contemporary” enough.  So I scoured the web for modern sustainable statement earrings by my favorite brands.  Here are 20 of my favorites.  Each pair is ethically made and/or supports a great cause.  All earrings…

I Just Want To Hang With My Dog

    July 26, 2018 / 3 Comments

It’s true.  I do just want to hang with my dog.  His name is Finn, he’s a rescue, and he’s pretty much the coolest guy I know.  So when I spotted this dog lovers tee at The Flourish Market I knew I had to have it. “Here at the Flourish Market, every product has a bigger purpose, just like you” states the Flourish Market’s website.  Originally started as a uniform truck then a do-good clothing truck, Em Sexton opened the brick & mortar store in downtown Raleigh in 2016.  The store partners with 50+ brands in the United States and all over the world to to provide jobs and fair wages…
